Signal introduces local encrypted backups for iPhone and iPad
Signal has introduced a new feature for iPhone and iPad users that allows for the local backup of messages and media files. Included in version 8.30 of the iOS application, this update enables users to create encrypted copies of their data and store them in a user-selected folder on their device.
The local backup system utilizes the same cross-platform format used by Signal on Android and Desktop. To ensure security, backups are protected by a 64-character recovery key. This same key is used for Signal’s cloud-based Secure Backups, allowing users to manage both local and cloud storage with a single credential.
Key technical features include incremental backups, where only changed files are processed to save space, and the automatic removal of duplicate files. Users have three backup options: free local backups, a free tier of Signal Secure Backups covering text and 45 days of media, and a paid cloud service offering up to 100 GB of storage.
