Trump Reflecting Pool Renovation Under Congressional Probe

A Senate investigation led by Sen. Jeff Merkley is examining the $14‑$16 million no‑bid contract awarded to Green Water Solutions and Atlantic Industrial Coatings for the Reflecting Pool overhaul at the Lincoln Memorial. The project, rushed to be finished by July 4, 2026, resulted in a green algae bloom, peeling paint and a damaged liner that officials say was cut with a sharp tool. Contractors have been questioned about selection, cost and the rapid timeline.

The National Park Service reported that the new liner is fraying and that fence posts were thrown into the water. Former employees of Sika Corporation, which supplied materials for the 2010‑12 renovation, said they declined the Trump‑era job because the demand for a blue‑colored pool bottom and the July 4 deadline made the work “unfeasible.” The pool remains fenced off, partially drained and is slated for further repairs after the Independence Day celebrations. Dead ducks and continued algae growth have intensified criticism, while the White House has suggested vandalism without presenting evidence.
