Oil prices exceed $100 amid US-Iran conflict escalation

Global energy markets are experiencing significant volatility as the conflict between the United States and Iran intensifies. Brent crude oil prices have surged past the $100 per barrel threshold, marking the first time this level has been breached since late July. This rally is driven by heightened fears of supply disruptions in the Middle East, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage for global oil and gas flows.

Military exchanges have escalated significantly. The US Central Command reported that American forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island in response to previous attacks. In retaliation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have targeted two US vessels, eight oil tankers, and ten other ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Iran launched ballistic missiles toward the al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan; the Jordanian military reported intercepting 18 of the 20 missiles, with the remaining two landing in unpopulated areas.

Beyond oil, European natural gas prices have spiked, with the TTF contract reaching levels not seen since late 2022. Gold prices have also risen as investors seek safe-haven assets amid geopolitical uncertainty and a weakening US dollar. Analysts note that the ongoing instability and the potential for prolonged conflict continue to place immense pressure on global energy security and commodity markets.
