Nusa Tenggara Timur earthquake recovery efforts underway
Following a massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), the Indonesian government is prioritizing national resources to manage disaster relief and recovery. Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has visited several affected areas, including Manggarai Timur and Sikka, to inspect damaged homes, visit refugee camps, and ensure aid reaches both official shelters and independent evacuees. He has also instructed that data collection for house repairs be intensified and that credit payment moratoriums be considered for victims.
In Sikka, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian praised the local government's centralized and accurate data management regarding refugees and aid distribution. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) has committed to overseeing the long-term recovery of residents, particularly in Palue Island, to address psychological trauma and restore livelihoods.
Seismological monitoring continues as the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 5.2 magnitude aftershock on August 22, which did not pose a tsunami threat. As of that date, BMKG has recorded over 5,000 aftershocks following the initial major quake. The humanitarian effort has also seen tragedy, with volunteer Ahmad Zaki Ali passing away due to exhaustion while distributing aid in Manggarai Timur.
