Sikkim hosts inaugural Himalayan Yak Festival in Gnathang Valley

The first-ever Himalayan Yak Festival has commenced in the Gnathang Valley of Sikkim, located near the India-China border. Organized by the state’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department, the event began on October 28.

Approximately 400 to 500 yaks are participating in the festival. The initiative aims to promote yak conservation, boost tourism in high-altitude regions, and support the sustainable livelihoods of herding communities in border villages. The event features stalls showcasing yak products and demonstrations of advancements in artificial insemination for yak breeding.

Gnathang-Machong MLA Pamin Lepcha noted that the festival seeks to bring the pastoral community together and raise awareness regarding their needs in harsh climatic conditions. Additionally, Thupden Lachungpa of the Yak Federation of India expressed hope that the festival will encourage younger generations to return to the traditional occupation of yak herding.
