Silas Malafaia faces legal action and political disputes
Pastor Silas Malafaia is facing multiple legal and political challenges in Brazil. He is currently contesting a criminal action brought by Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet to the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The prosecution alleges that Malafaia committed libel and slander against the Brazilian Army High Command, specifically targeting Army Commander Tomás Paiva, after Malafaia referred to four-star generals as “cowards” and “weaklings” during a protest in São Paulo.
Malafaia argues that his criticisms were generic and did not name specific individuals, claiming the prosecution is attempting to induce the court into error. He also expressed disagreement with the case being assigned to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, asserting his right to be judged in a lower court rather than the STF.
Separately, Malafaia has engaged in a public dispute with Sebastião Coelho, a candidate for the Senate in the Federal District. Malafaia accused Coelho of using edited videos to attack him and criticized the candidate for potentially dividing right-wing votes. Malafaia emphasized the importance of following the political guidance of Jair Bolsonaro to ensure the election of candidates like Michelle Bolsonaro and Bia Kicis.
