Silchar Municipal Corporation holds first election amid rain
The maiden election for the newly constituted Silchar Municipal Corporation saw a provisional voter turnout of 63.43% across 40 wards. Polling, which utilized ballot papers, was conducted amid rain and overcast weather that impacted early participation.
While the turnout was higher in newly added suburban areas, participation was notably lower in the city's core compared to the 80.3% recorded during earlier assembly elections. The BJP secured two wards uncontested prior to the vote.
Heavy rainfall and significant waterlogging became central issues for residents, highlighting long-standing concerns regarding inadequate civic infrastructure, poor road conditions, and drainage maintenance. Despite reports of minor clashes outside a polling station, local authorities stated the process remained largely peaceful.
