Sildenafil blocks cancer metastasis in preclinical study

Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science, together with collaborators from the United States, reported that sildenafil – the active ingredient of Viagra – interferes with tumor cells' ability to use cholesterol, a key resource for their growth and spread. In mouse experiments and cell‑culture models, the drug reduced the formation of metastases, and the findings were published in the journal Cancer Research.

The work, led by Professor Ayelet Erez, is presented as an early example of drug repurposing. The National Cancer Institute highlighted the potential of the approach, but emphasized that the results are still experimental. Clinical trials are required before sildenafil could be considered a therapeutic option for cancer patients.
