Silent Book Club expands global community for introverts
The Silent Book Club, a global movement founded in San Francisco in 2012, is gaining popularity as a way for introverts to socialize without the pressure of traditional networking or assigned reading. The format allows members to gather in public spaces like cafes, libraries, and parks to read their own chosen books in companionable silence, with optional socializing following the reading session.
In Manila, the movement has grown from small pandemic-era sessions into a large community with over 2,200 members on Discord. Similarly, the DAI Library in Germany hosts regular sessions for the community. The club's model is described as a “happy hour for introverts,” removing the “homework” and performance anxiety often associated with traditional literary circles.
