Silent Memory Traces Discovered in Fruit Fly Brains
Neuroscientists Wenbin Yang, Benedetta Zattera and Miguel Pavão‑Delgado at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Switzerland reported that forgotten memories can persist as silent traces in the brain of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Published in Nature Neuroscience, the study showed that after an aversive odor‑shock association fades, the memory can be re‑activated when the flies are later exposed to a context that recreates key elements of the original experience. The researchers note that such retrieval may also generate false memories, highlighting a conditional memory system that balances information loss and flexible recall.
The findings suggest that memories may be stored in an inaccessible state, ready for reinstatement under appropriate cues, offering new insight into how the brain prioritises memory retrieval.
