Silent Spring Institute identifies 485 pesticide chemicals linked to breast cancer risk

Researchers from the Silent Spring Institute have identified 485 chemical compounds found in pesticide formulations that may be linked to the development of breast cancer. The findings, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, highlight potential gaps in current pesticide safety assessments.

The study analyzed data from over ten U.S. state databases, narrowing down a previous list of 900 chemicals. Among the 485 identified compounds are 145 active substances registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These substances are used to control insects, weeds, and fungi.

Of particular concern to researchers are ‘inert’ or auxiliary ingredients. While the term ‘inert’ may suggest safety, these additives are used to improve stability, solubility, or distribution of the pesticide. The study suggests these components often do not undergo the same rigorous safety testing as active ingredients, raising questions about human exposure through food, water, and everyday consumer products.
