Silent travel trend gains interest through Swedish noise-limit cabin
A tourism marketing campaign in Skåne, Sweden, has highlighted the growing trend of ‘silent travel’ by offering stays in a forest cabin with a strict noise limit. To participate, guests must not exceed 45 decibels, a level comparable to a quiet refrigerator or light rain. The initiative received over 200 applications, reflecting a widespread desire for quiet in a digitally saturated world.
Psychologist Christina Miro notes that while low-stimulus environments can provide relief from daily stress, they can also present mental challenges. When digital distractions and social interactions are removed, individuals are forced to confront their own thoughts and emotions more directly. While this can be therapeutic for some, Miro warns that for those struggling with depression or intense emotional cycles, the lack of external distraction may increase psychological strain. The effectiveness of such retreats depends heavily on whether the silence is chosen voluntarily and the individual's ability to manage their internal dialogue.
