Silesia advances green projects amid shifting EU funding rules

The Silesia region is undergoing significant economic and environmental shifts. The Provincial Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Katowice has awarded over 9.6 million PLN to 34 projects through its ‘Green Space 2026’ competition. These funds, consisting of both grants and loans, aim to transform neglected urban areas into recreational and educational green spaces, including flower meadows, walking paths, and parks.

Simultaneously, the region faces changes in how it accesses European Union financial support. As Silesia’s economic development increases—reaching 78% of the EU average GDP per capita—it is transitioning into a ‘transition region’ category. This growth may result in a lower proportion of EU funds compared to less developed areas. Furthermore, upcoming EU budget negotiations for 2028–2034 suggest a shift in funding philosophy, where national governments will play a larger role in distributing funds that were previously negotiated directly by regional authorities.
