Silesia seeks €2 billion as EU fund distribution rules change

The Silesian Voivodeship requires approximately €2 billion to complete projects initiated under the Just Transition Fund. Discussions regarding the European Union budget for 2028–2034 in Katowice highlighted the need for continued support for the region's energy transformation, water access, energy costs, and housing.

A significant shift in the distribution of EU funds is expected. Silesian Marshal Wojciech Saługa confirmed that the mechanism for managing these funds will change, as regional governments will no longer sign agreements directly with the European Commission. Instead, the Polish central government will become the primary partner for signing agreements.

Under the new system, existing separate funds are expected to be integrated into national and regional partnership plans, potentially increasing the role of central authorities in determining spending rules. Poland is projected to have access to €123 billion in the new EU budget, with a focus on defense and competitiveness.
