Silica gel packets, often found in new shoes, electronics, and bags, can be reused for various household purposes rather than being discarded. These packets function by absorbing moisture through a porous structure, with some capable of absorbing up to 40 percent of their own weight in water.

Practical applications include drying wet electronics, such as smartphones, by placing them in an airtight container with the packets for 24 to 48 hours. This method is noted as more effective and safer than using rice, which can leave debris in device ports. They can also be used to dry wet leather shoes, prevent rust in toolboxes, protect jewelry, and keep dry pantry goods like breadcrumbs or coffee from absorbing moisture.

Safety considerations are important: while colorless, undyed silica gel is generally considered non-toxic, it should not be ingested. Users should be cautious with colored varieties; blue silica gel may contain cobalt chloride, and orange silica gel may contain triphenylmethane, both of which carry health risks if inhaled. It is advised to keep these packets out of reach of children and pets.
