Silicon Labs opens new semiconductor R&D lab in Austin

Silicon Labs has opened the Austin Innovation Center, a new research and development laboratory located at its headquarters in Austin, Texas. The facility is dedicated to the design, testing, and validation of advanced semiconductors for wireless Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

The expansion was supported by a $23 million grant from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF), which was established under the Texas CHIPS Act. This funding has allowed the company to upgrade equipment to work with more advanced wafer process technology nodes.

The new laboratory will support Silicon Labs’ wireless portfolio, including its Series 3 platform, which integrates wireless connectivity with security and AI capabilities. These technologies are intended for use in smart homes, industrial equipment, healthcare, commercial buildings, and smart cities. The increased capacity is expected to accelerate product development and shorten the timeline from chip design to commercial availability.
