Ship collision near Silivri sinks Tuğberk İmamoğlu
A major maritime investigation is underway following a collision in the Sea of Marmara near Silivri, which resulted in the sinking of the cargo vessel Tuğberk İmamoğlu. The vessel, carrying 4,199 tons of rolled steel, sank approximately 8 to 11 minutes after colliding with the tanker Alsu. Ten crew members from the Tuğberk İmamoğlu remain missing.
Preliminary expert reports have identified significant bridge discipline failures on both vessels. On the Alsu, Captain Ahmet Erarslan was reportedly sleeping in his cabin during the collision, and the bridge was left under the sole supervision of 3rd Captain Murat Evciman, who had joined the vessel only one day prior. The report noted a lack of lookouts or helmsmen on the Alsu's bridge.
The Tuğberk İmamoğlu was also cited for operational failures, including sailing with its AIS (Automatic Identification System) malfunctioning or turned off, and making a sudden starboard turn in the final 0.5 miles that triggered the collision.
Search and rescue operations, coordinated by the Turkish Navy, Coast Guard, and other agencies, have located the wreckage of the Tuğberk İmamoğlu at a depth of approximately 720 meters. Two captains from the Alsu, Ahmet Erarslan and Murat Evciman, have been arrested on charges of causing death and injury through negligence.
