Silmido film updates subtitles to correct historical portrayal of agents

The subtitles for the 2003 film ‘Silmido’ have been updated 23 years after its release to correct historical inaccuracies regarding the background of the unit's operatives. The film originally depicted the Silmido unit agents as criminals, including death row inmates and life prisoners. However, investigations by the Ministry of National Defense's Committee for Investigating Past Historical Facts and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission have clarified that most of the operatives were actually ordinary civilians.

Following a request from the Silmido Victims' Bereaved Families Association, the Ministry of National Defense asked the distributor, CJ ENM, to modify the introductory subtitles. The new text explicitly states that the portrayal of the agents as special criminals or death row inmates was inconsistent with historical facts and offers condolences to the victims and their families.

The Silmido unit was established in 1968 to conduct infiltration operations into North Korea. Following years of harsh training and mistreatment, 24 members escaped in 1971, leading to a violent confrontation with military and police forces in Seoul. The Ministry of National Defense has recently taken steps toward restorative justice, including issuing a formal apology and resuming efforts to excavate the remains of the deceased agents.
