Silmy Karim immigration extortion case transferred to prosecutors

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has transferred the case files of an immigration extortion scandal involving former Deputy Minister of Immigration and Correctional Affairs, Silmy Karim, to the Public Prosecutor. The case, which follows a sting operation in June 2026, involves eight suspects accused of extorting foreign nationals to expedite residence permits, with fees ranging from Rp 1 million to Rp 1.5 million per person. Karim is alleged to have received approximately Rp 100 million weekly.

In a recent legal development, the South Jakarta District Court rejected Silmy Karim's pretrial motion, upholding the KPK's status as a suspect and validating its search and seizure actions.

Investigators are also expanding the probe into academic corruption. The KPK is questioning a lecturer at Universitas Brawijaya regarding allegations that Karim provided routine payments to a doctoral supervisor. While Karim's legal counsel argues these payments may stem from personal funds and do not prove extortion, investigators are examining whether these funds originated from illegal deposits within the Directorate General of Immigration.
