Silopi, Turkey child killed by electric shock from air‑conditioner unit

On 6 August 2026, four‑year‑old Miraç Tayşun touched the external unit of an air‑conditioner installed on a building in the Bersis TOKİ housing complex in Silopi, Şırnak Province, Turkey. The contact caused an electric shock; emergency services rushed the child to Silopi State Hospital, but despite all medical efforts he died.

Police opened a negligence investigation. The owner of the residence, identified only as B. K., was detained, charged with “negligent homicide,” and subsequently placed in custody after a court hearing. The case remains under investigation.

The incident has sparked local mourning and raised concerns about safety standards for outdoor electrical installations in residential areas.
