Silvan Widmer retires from Swiss national football team

Silvan Widmer has announced his immediate retirement from the Swiss national football team after 12 years and 65 international appearances. The 33-year-old defender stated that the decision was driven by a desire to allow his body more recovery time and to focus entirely on his club career with Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga.

Widmer’s international career spanned from his debut against San Marino in 2014 to his final tournament at the 2026 World Cup. He participated in four major tournaments, including two European Championships and two World Cups. National team coach Murat Yakin praised Widmer for his high-level performance, professionalism, and positive influence on the squad.

In his farewell, Widmer expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaching staff, fans, and his wife for their support throughout his tenure with the national team.
