Silver Institute study highlights gold-silver ratio and market trends
A recent study by Precious Metals Insights, commissioned by the Silver Institute, suggests that the gold-silver ratio remains a valid technical indicator for forecasting market trajectories. The study, which analyzed data spanning over 3,000 years alongside modern supply and demand metrics, identifies a long-term equilibrium for the ratio at approximately 60:1.
With the ratio currently sitting around 67:1, analysts suggest that silver may have relative catching-up potential, as high central bank demand for gold has pushed the ratio above its historical mean. The report notes that when the ratio rises significantly above this average, it often signals that silver is underpriced relative to gold.
Beyond the ratio, the Silver Institute anticipates a sixth consecutive structural silver deficit in 2026. Physical investment demand is projected to rise by 20% to 227 million ounces. Key drivers for structural silver demand include artificial intelligence, data centers, and automotive applications.
