Silver Mining M&A Surge and Price Decline Reshape Industry

After five years of little activity, the silver mining sector entered a rapid consolidation phase in 2024‑2025, with announced transactions worth about US$14.3 billion. Six deals accounted for more than 90 % of that value, expanding the footprints of major producers.

First Majestic Silver agreed to buy Gatos Silver in an all‑stock deal valued at roughly US$970 million, adding a 70 % interest in the Cerro Los Gatos mine and boosting combined production to 30‑32 million silver‑equivalent ounces. Coeur Mining completed its acquisition of New Gold, adding the New Afton gold‑copper mine in British Columbia and the Rainy River gold‑silver mine in Ontario. Pan American Silver finalized the purchase of a 44 % stake in the Juanicipio mine from MAG Silver, further consolidating its position in Mexico.

At the same time, silver prices have fallen more than 20 % from recent peaks. The lower price improves the economic viability of certain projects, reduces input costs for downstream users in agriculture, forestry and infrastructure, and prompts miners to reassess capital plans and expansion strategies.
