Silver Pheasant impact documented on Isla Victoria, Patagonia
Research conducted by CONICET and the Universidad Nacional del Comahue has documented the impact of the silver pheasant, an exotic species from Southeast Asia, on Isla Victoria within Argentina's Nahuel Huapi National Park.
Studies performed between 2011 and 2013 revealed that pheasant density reaches 5.69 birds per hectare in highly modified areas near the port, compared to 1.77 birds per hectare in better-preserved sectors. Analysis of fecal matter indicates that these birds disperse more exotic plant seeds in proportion to native birds, which facilitates the spread of invasive species in the local ecosystem.
The silver pheasant was introduced to the 31-square-kilometer island through multiple releases during the 1950s. It is one of the few exotic species to thrive on the island, alongside the red deer and fallow deer, following historical introductions of various flora and fauna intended to transform the Patagonian landscape.
