Silver Rail Elementary shooting kills three children and a teacher in Oregon

A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, resulted in the deaths of three children, aged 5, 8, and 11, and a teacher. The attack targeted a special education classroom.

The suspect, identified as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, was a former special-needs student at the school. He reportedly used a 12-gauge Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun, which was purchased by his mother, to force entry through locked doors.

During the incident, a teacher heroically attempted to disarm the gunman by throwing her phone at him and tackling him, though she was not injured. The gunman was ultimately shot and killed by Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old father of two students at the school, who pursued the attacker into the building.

Two others, a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher, were hospitalized in critical condition. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek have addressed the tragedy, with the Governor praising the bystander's intervention in preventing further loss of life.
