Silves prisoners to assist with public maintenance in Algoz
The Algoz Parish Council has signed a protocol with the Directorate-General for Reinsertion and Prison Services (DGRSP), via the Silves Prison Establishment, to allow inmates to participate in community support activities.
Under the Open Regime Abroad (RAE), participants will engage in urban cleaning, the maintenance and conservation of public spaces and equipment, heritage valorization, gardening, and environmental protection. The agreement also allows for logistical support for local parish initiatives.
The primary goal of the collaboration is to promote social and professional reintegration by providing practical experience, skill acquisition, and work habits to facilitate a return to society. The parish council clarified that these activities are intended to be complementary to existing staff and are not a mechanism to replace local workers. Participants will remain subject to prison regulations and supervision.
