Silvio Garattini and Valentino Gardi release new book on addiction

Physician and researcher Silvio Garattini, founder of the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research, and legal expert Valentino Gardi have released a new book titled ‘Smetto quando voglio?’ (I Quit When I Want?). The work examines the challenges of smoking and alcohol addiction through the interconnected lenses of science, medicine, and law.

The book analyzes the health impacts of active and passive smoking, including respiratory and cardiovascular damage, cancer links, and the risks associated with electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products. It also addresses environmental impacts and the protection of minors.

A significant portion of the text is dedicated to alcohol consumption, which the authors describe as an often underestimated issue. The volume explores risky behaviors among youth and the physiological effects on the liver, brain, and fertility. Beyond individual responsibility, the authors question the role of public institutions and the necessity of effective public policies in preventing addiction.
