Silvio Garattini warns of cancer risks from alcohol consumption

Silvio Garattini, the 97-year-old founder and president of the Mario Negri Institute, has issued a warning regarding the carcinogenic nature of alcohol. In an article published in ‘Fatto Quotidiano’, Garattini challenged the common belief that low levels of alcohol consumption are harmless, stating that even a single glass of wine per day carries health risks.

Garattini noted that while reducing consumption can lower risk, it does not eliminate it entirely. He highlighted the differences in alcohol content across beverages, noting that beer typically contains 4-5%, wine 12-15%, and spirits approximately 40% alcohol.

The researcher also criticized the lack of clear health warnings on alcoholic beverage packaging compared to the explicit warnings found on tobacco products. He cited New Zealand as an example of a country where wine bottles include messages regarding potential health damage, suggesting that improved public information is essential for fostering more conscious consumer choices.
