Silvretta High Alpine Road may reopen by 2029

The Silvretta High Alpine Road, which was buried by landslides in 2024 and 2025, may reopen earlier than previously anticipated. The operator, Illwerke Vkw, announced that the goal is to reopen the 22-kilometer pass for public and operational traffic by 2029.

Previously, the operator estimated that the extensive repairs required due to rockfalls would not be completed until 2030. However, following consultations with a university professor, the reconstruction steps have been optimized. It was determined that smaller-scale protective structures could be utilized, providing a faster path to reopening.

The timeline remains subject to official approvals and supervisory board decisions, which are expected next spring. While work has already been completed between bends 13 and 14, Illwerke emphasized that safety remains the highest priority given the ongoing risk of rockfalls along several kilometers of the route.
