Senegal authorities arrest suspects in trafficking and fraud cases

Senegalese authorities have arrested several individuals in connection with distinct criminal investigations involving human trafficking, food theft, and the embezzlement of public funds.

In Saint-Louis, Papa Demba Wade was apprehended for his alleged role in organizing a 2022 illegal migration attempt that resulted in the deaths of eleven people when their pirogue capsized. Investigators found evidence that Wade was planning a new voyage for September 2026, charging candidates up to 1.5 million CFA francs.

In a separate commercial fraud case, SIMAR S. A. reported a loss exceeding 363 million CFA francs due to an organized system of stealing and reselling food supplies, including wheat, maize, and rice. The investigation led to several arrests in Senegal and two suspects in Guinea-Bissau.

Additionally, two agents from the Ministry of Health have been detained following the discovery of fraudulent payments intended for seventh-year medical students. While 178.6 million CFA francs have been documented, the total suspected embezzlement may reach 390 million CFA francs through the manipulation of beneficiary files.
