Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza wins 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing

Zimbabwean writer Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza has won the 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing, receiving a £10,000 award for his short story, ‘The Blue Fighter’. Kundizeza was selected from over 400 entries representing 27 African countries.

His winning story follows a young boy named Tinashe and his family’s struggle with financial hardship after his father leaves his profession to pursue a passion for building fish tanks. The narrative explores themes of fatherhood, ambition, and the difficult choices families face when balancing individual dreams against survival.

The judging panel was chaired by Nigerian journalist Bola Mosuro. The shortlist included writers from Kenya, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Egypt. Kundizeza becomes the third Zimbabwean to win the prestigious prize, following Brian Chikwava in 2004 and NoViolet Bulawayo in 2011.
