Simi Valley police officer shoots suspect in California hospital
On July 2, 2026, Simi Valley Police Officer Carly Grice shot 46-year-old Luis Ramirez-Macias inside Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks, California. Ramirez-Macias was under police guard at the facility following an alleged attempt to kill his wife earlier that day.
According to police, the incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. while Ramirez-Macias was being assessed for medical attention. During the assessment, he allegedly used a glass medication vial to inflict self-harm before lunging at Officer Grice with the shattered glass as a makeshift weapon. Surveillance footage shows Ramirez-Macias, who was naked and covered in blood, advancing toward the officer, prompting Grice to fire a single shot.
Hospital staff provided immediate medical aid to Ramirez-Macias. He survived the shooting and remained hospitalized for several days before being released and booked into the Ventura County Main Jail. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the officer-involved shooting.
