The Romanian judicial system is facing a significant controversy following an unannounced meeting between Simina Tănăsescu, President of the Constitutional Court (CCR), and dismissed Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The meeting reportedly took place on August 14 in the office of Senate President Mircea Abrudean.

In response, the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) and 16 presidents of appeal courts have called for urgent public clarifications to ensure transparency and protect the appearance of judicial impartiality. The magistrates expressed concern that the lack of transparency is “profoundly inadequate” for a constitutional jurisdiction, especially as the CCR is set to rule on significant matters, including the Integrity Law.

The Senate Permanent Bureau has convened a meeting to address the situation. Additionally, the PACE-Întai Romania parliamentary group has requested the establishment of a 13-member Senate inquiry commission to investigate the circumstances of the meeting, its official nature, and whether any institutional communications occurred between the Government, Parliament, and the CCR.

Simina Tănăsescu has rejected all speculation regarding the discussion of pending court cases, stating that the meeting involved administrative and representative duties. The CCR issued a statement asserting that the President's functions include administrative and organizational tasks and that no case on the Court's docket has been discussed outside of legal and procedural frameworks.
