Cowell's absence is due to ongoing back issues stemming from a serious electric bike accident in Malibu in 2020, which resulted in multiple spinal fractures and required extensive surgery. While the upcoming procedure is described as routine, it addresses long-standing medical concerns.

During his absence, guest judges are expected to fill his seat on the panel, which currently includes Howie Mandel, Sofía Vergara, and Mel B. The show is currently in its 21st season on NBC.
