Simon Edvinsson to attend Red Wings camp despite contract delay

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson intends to attend training camp later this month despite currently being without a new contract. The 23-year-old restricted free agent has reportedly put contract negotiations on hold until the organization finalizes the hiring of a permanent general manager.

Edvinsson, a former sixth overall pick, is a key component of Detroit’s defensive core alongside Moritz Seider. While acting GM Shawn Horcoff oversees roster additions, the delay in hiring a permanent replacement has stalled talks with Edvinsson’s representatives.

The timing is significant due to a new NHL collective bargaining agreement taking effect on September 16, which reduces the maximum contract length for players re-signing with their current teams from eight years to seven. This creates a deadline for Detroit if they wish to offer an eight-season deal.
