Simon Ekpa appeals six-year prison sentence in Finland

Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafra separatist campaigner, has appealed his six-year prison sentence in Finland for terrorism-related offenses. The Finnish Court of Appeal is expected to hear the case within the next three weeks.

In September 2025, the Päijät-Häme District Court convicted Ekpa of inciting terrorism and participating in the activities of a terrorist organization. The court found that between August 2021 and November 2024, Ekpa used his significant social media following to increase tensions in Nigeria’s South-East. The ruling also stated that Ekpa facilitated the supply of weapons, explosives, and ammunition to militant groups and encouraged followers on X to commit crimes in Nigeria. Additionally, he was convicted of aggravated tax fraud and violating Finland’s Attorneys Act.

The Finnish prosecutor has also filed an appeal, arguing that the six-year sentence is insufficient for the crimes committed. Ekpa is seeking to have the judgment overturned or the punishment reduced.
