Simon Fraser University opens new medical school in Surrey

The inaugural class of 48 students has begun studies at Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) Stephens Family School of Medicine in Surrey, British Columbia. This marks the province’s first new medical school in nearly 60 years.

Designed to address the regional doctor shortage and high pressure on emergency rooms, the school utilizes an innovative three-year, year-round program. This curriculum allows students to graduate and enter residencies one year sooner than traditional medical programs, with the first cohort expected to begin residencies as early as 2029.

Students are currently using interim spaces at the SFU Surrey campus while a permanent facility is under construction, with completion expected in 2030. The program aims to expand its enrollment from the initial 48 students to 120 students per year by 2035.
