Simon Harris denies heated discussion with Patrick O’Donovan

Tánaiste Simon Harris has denied reports of a ‘heated’ conversation with Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport Patrick O’Donovan prior to the minister’s recent hospitalization. O’Donovan, who has epilepsy and struggles with photosensitivity, was hospitalized after suffering a seizure during an EU telecommunications meeting in Limerick.

Following speculation regarding the nature of their last contact, Harris clarified that he was the last senior government official to speak with O’Donovan but described the interaction as a routine chat. Harris expressed annoyance regarding anonymous briefings concerning O’Donovan’s health and ability to remain in his role, stating that the characterization of their conversation was inaccurate.

Harris, who recently returned from paternity leave, visited O’Donovan and his family in the hospital. He noted that O’Donovan is doing well and emphasized that the priority is his recovery before he returns to government duties.
