Simon Nemec joins Calgary Flames following New Jersey Devils trade

Slovak defenseman Simon Nemec is preparing to join the Calgary Flames following a trade from the New Jersey Devils. The 22-year-old signed a five-year contract worth $36.25 million, averaging $7.25 million per season.

Nemec, a former second-round pick from 2022, expressed dissatisfaction with his limited role in New Jersey, where he was often the third option on the power play. The trade was one of the first moves made by new Devils general manager Sunny Mehta. Nemec expects to see increased ice time and leadership opportunities in Calgary under coach Ryan Huska.

In his previous season with the Devils, Nemec recorded 11 goals and 26 points in 68 games, averaging 19:40 of ice time per game. He is expected to join the Flames in late August to participate in preseason preparations.
