Simon Weckert creates AI-evading digital camouflage shirt

German designer Simon Weckert has developed a garment called ‘Digital Camouflage’ designed to evade AI-driven surveillance systems. The shirt features an abstract, colorful pattern of bright green, pink, and orange shapes that functions as a visual disruptor for image recognition technology.

Weckert explains that AI surveillance systems identify humans by analyzing statistical visual patterns, such as edges, textures, and body silhouettes. By using an ‘adversarial loop’ process to create the print, the designer produced a pattern that confuses these algorithms. In demonstrations, the shirt caused AI detection boxes and ‘PERSON’ labels to disappear from video feeds, effectively making the wearer invisible to the software.

The project highlights growing concerns regarding the expansion of automated monitoring in urban environments and raises questions about the accuracy and ethical implications of AI-based public surveillance.
