Simon Weckert creates shirt to evade AI surveillance

German designer Simon Weckert has developed a garment called ‘Digital Camouflage’ designed to prevent AI-powered surveillance systems from identifying the wearer. The shirt features a chaotic pattern of pink, orange, and green blotches intended to disrupt the visual continuity of the human body's outline.

Weckert explains that AI surveillance does not understand the concept of a human, but rather identifies people through statistical patterns of edges, textures, and silhouettes. To counter this, the pattern was created using an ‘adversarial loop’ where AI was used to iteratively adjust the design until the detection system's confidence in identifying a person collapsed. While the shirt appears as a highly visible, colorful garment to human observers, it is designed to register as nothing to machine perception.
