Simon Weckert develops digital camouflage shirt to evade AI surveillance
Berlin-based artist and technologist Simon Weckert has developed a garment designed to evade AI-driven video surveillance. Dubbed “Digital Camouflage,” the shirt utilizes a chaotic pattern of pink, orange, and green shapes to disrupt the outline detection software used by object-recognition systems. By employing a generative AI method known as TC-EGA (Toroidal-Cropping-based Expandable Generative Attack), Weckert created a pattern that prevents machines from identifying the wearer as a human figure. The project was developed in response to planned AI surveillance at Berlin’s Kottbusser Tor station.
In a separate development regarding digital privacy, researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology demonstrated how WLAN signals can be used for invisible monitoring. By analyzing Beamforming Feedback Information (BFI) from modern routers, researchers were able to distinguish between 197 individuals with nearly 100% accuracy, even without the subjects carrying any Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
