Simple Blood Test Predicts Dementia Risk, Researchers Report
A new study found that measuring the p‑tau217 protein in a routine blood sample can identify older adults at higher risk of developing dementia. Participants with elevated p‑tau217 levels had a 38% greater chance of showing early dementia signs within five years, and an estimated 78% higher risk over ten years, though the longer‑term data are less certain. Researchers stress that the test alone cannot diagnose Alzheimer's disease and should be used alongside other clinical assessments.
Separately, large lifestyle‑intervention trials such as Finland's FINGER study and its extensions in the Netherlands and across Latin America are evaluating how diet, exercise, social engagement, and other modifiable factors affect dementia onset. The World Health Organization plans to release new dementia risk‑reduction guidelines on July 16. Experts note that while individual actions matter, broader determinants—including pollution, education access, and socioeconomic conditions—also drive the projected rise in dementia cases from 57 million in 2019 to an estimated 153 million by 2050.
