Simu Liu reports progress on ‘Sleeping Dogs’ film adaptation

Actor Simu Liu has provided a significant update regarding the live-action film adaptation of the video game ‘Sleeping Dogs’. In a recent post on X, Liu stated that the project has ‘a REAL path forward’ and is moving along well.

The production has already secured a director, Timo Tjahjanto, and a production company, Story Kitchen. A script draft was reportedly completed in October 2025. Liu is set to star as the protagonist, undercover officer Wei Shen, and will also serve as an executive producer.

The primary remaining hurdle is the negotiation of rights with the game’s publisher, Square Enix. This new iteration follows a previous attempt to adapt the title that was reportedly cancelled in early 2025. The film is expected to follow the original game's setting of a neon-infused, neo-noir Hong Kong, focusing on the conflict between law enforcement and the Triad crime syndicates.
