Cambodia and U.S. dismantle Sinaloa Cartel cryptocurrency laundering network

Cambodian and U.S. anti-drug agencies have dismantled a cryptocurrency laundering network linked to Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel. The joint operation, involving the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Cambodia’s National Authority for Combating Drugs, targeted locations in Phnom Penh and Kandal province between August 1 and August 5.

Authorities reported the seizure of approximately $7 million in cryptocurrency. In addition to financial assets, law enforcement confiscated over 200 kilograms of illegal drugs and more than one metric ton of precursor chemicals used in drug production. The raids also led to several arrests and the discovery of drug laboratories and storage facilities.

The Sinaloa Cartel, which has been designated a “foreign terrorist organization” by the U.S. government, is a major producer of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids. This operation highlights the expanding reach of Mexican criminal organizations into Southeast Asian financial and logistics networks.
