Mexican state legislatures launch youth participation and merit programs

Legislative bodies across various Mexican states are hosting events to promote youth participation and recognize excellence among young citizens.

In Sinaloa, the State Congress held a solemn session to present the 2026 Youth Merit Award. The ceremony, attended by interim Governor Graciela Domínguez Nava, honored five individuals for their achievements in academic/scientific, artistic, sporting, business, and civic/social categories. Winners received diplomas, gold medallions, and 35,000 pesos each.

Other regional initiatives include the Youth Parliament in Sonora, which focuses on digital environments, security, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence. In Oaxaca, the Fourth Youth Congress brought together representatives from eight regions to propose legislative reforms regarding education, health, and indigenous language preservation. Additionally, Chiapas hosted an oratory showcase titled ‘Voices in Honor of Childhood’ to foster civic participation among new generations.

In Querétaro, legislative leaders encouraged youth to engage with the local Congress regarding citizen initiatives, specifically following a failed proposal to reform the Penal Code concerning family violence. Meanwhile, Sinaloa has also launched the ‘ABC of Emotions’ national strategy to address mental health among adolescents aged 14 to 18.
