Enrique Inzunza denies cartel links amid US extradition request

Mexican Senator Enrique Inzunza Cázarez has reappeared in the Senate to deny allegations of links to organized crime. Inzunza, who has been absent from legislative duties for four months, is facing an arrest warrant and extradition request from a prosecutor in New York. He maintains he is “inocente constitucional y verídicamente” and has characterized the accusations as a political attack.

Inzunza admitted that five of his bank accounts have been frozen by the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), though he stated he has been receiving his legislative salary and pension via checks from the Senate. He has also declared himself an independent legislator after leaving the MORENA party.

Simultaneously, Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya is facing political scrutiny. The Sinaloa Congress has advanced a request for political impeachment against him following citizen petitions. Additionally, Rocha Moya recently requested a leave of absence from his position as governor, a move that received little support from federal authorities.
