Sinaloa promotes cultural recognition on Indigenous Peoples' Day

In recognition of International Indigenous Peoples' Day, the government of Sinaloa has highlighted both cultural achievements and ongoing socioeconomic challenges facing indigenous communities in the region.

To promote cultural identity and emotional well-being, DIF Sinaloa's Emotional Health and Inclusive Education Center (CRECE) hosted the “Raíces en el Lienzo” art therapy workshop. The event included guided meditation, discussions on indigenous worldviews, and artistic performances to honor ancestral wisdom and cultural heritage.

State authorities, including representatives from SEBIDES and COPACIS, acknowledged the presence of approximately 35 indigenous groups in Sinaloa, noting that the Mayo-Yoreme, Tarahumara, and Tepehuan are the only native groups, while others have migrated for agricultural work. While progress has been made in rights and support programs—such as productivity projects and aid for female artisans—significant challenges remain. These include the need for improved housing, basic infrastructure, and roads, as well as the loss of native languages among younger generations due to social media influence.
