Sinaloa sees increased military deployment amid security crisis

Sinaloa is experiencing a significant increase in federal security presence following a period of intense violence that left six people dead across various municipalities. In response, approximately 2,000 military personnel from the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) were deployed to Culiacán to reinforce urban security in coordination with the National Guard.

This deployment follows recent federal operations in Concordia, Culiacán, and Mazatlán. Previous actions resulted in the seizure of 172 improvised explosive devices and thousands of cartridges in Concordia, the disabling of a narcolaboratory containing 2,450 liters of chemicals in Culiacán, and the confiscation of a .50 caliber Barrett rifle and tactical equipment in Mazatlán.

The heightened military activity coincides with a political crisis involving Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, who requested a second leave of absence shortly after returning to office. Recent aerial activity has also been noted, including a Mexican Navy Mi-17 helicopter tracked flying through Mazatlán.
