Sinaloa to receive new prison after 12 deaths in Mazatlán clashes

Following two violent clashes at the El Castillo prison in Mazatlán, the Mexican federal government has announced plans to construct a new, modern detention center in Sinaloa. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch stated the project, ordered by President Claudia Sheinbaum, aims to strengthen penitentiary control and reduce violence in the state.

The recent violence occurred within a 48-hour period. The first incident on Thursday resulted in nine inmate deaths and the death of a child visitor, with 16 others injured. A second clash on Friday caused two additional deaths, bringing the total death toll to 12.

While the new facility is being planned, federal authorities have reinforced security at the current Mazatlán facility using the National Guard and specialized prison service personnel. The interim governor of Sinaloa, Graciela Domínguez Nava, has agreed to provide the land for the new construction, which will be funded by federal resources.
